Embed a chatbot on your website
This guide is for a website owner or developer embedding a chatbot that an Elowen administrator has prepared. The Chatbot plugin is optional and must be installed; its administrator creates the chatbot, assigns one managed Project and allows the website origin. Visitors use the widget, while the chatbot answers through its own Elowen account. For limits and conversation records, see Chatbot conversations and limits.
Prepare the chatbot
- Ask an Elowen administrator to install the Chatbot plugin and create or select a chatbot account.
- Have them bind it to exactly one active managed Project. The chatbot's instructions and knowledge come from that Project.
- Give the administrator the full website origin, including scheme and host, for example
https://www.example.com. No path is included. The origin must be allowed before the chatbot can answer there. - Ask the administrator to enable the chatbot after setting its allowed domain and required monthly spending limit. The chatbot does not answer visitors until these requirements are met.
The public ID in the embed snippet identifies the chatbot; it is not a secret. Do not treat it as an access credential. The allowed website origin is the admission boundary.
Add the widget
- In Elowen, an administrator opens Chatbots, selects the chatbot and copies its embed snippet. The panel may show the plugin's own configured display name; this is not necessarily your instance's name.
- Paste the complete snippet into the website page where the widget should load. Keep the script source and its chatbot identifier together; do not rewrite the URL from memory.
- Publish the page over HTTPS. For local testing, localhost is supported. Enabled chatbots accept HTTPS origins; plain HTTP is limited to loopback hosts such as localhost.
- Open the published page in a fresh browser tab and use the widget to send a short test question.
The script loads asynchronously. Its placement in the page determines where the widget code is included, while the configured chatbot appearance controls the panel and launcher.
Test and troubleshoot
Confirm the chatbot is enabled, has one active managed Project, has a monthly ceiling, and includes the exact origin of the page. A mismatch in scheme or host prevents admission. Check that the snippet belongs to the selected chatbot and that the page is served from the intended domain. A public ID alone cannot authorize another origin.
If no answer arrives, ask the administrator to inspect that chatbot's status and conversation records. A visitor conversation is recorded only after the first message is admitted. A restart can interrupt an answer; it is not automatically repeated. For the administrator's setup and limits, see Chatbot Plugin.
