Connect a custom domain

Use this guide when you own a domain and want it to open one of your Sites. The optional Sites plugin must be installed and enabled, and you must be able to manage the Site. Elowen provides DNS instructions; it does not change records at your DNS provider.

Add the domain

  1. Open Sites, select your Site, and open its details.
  2. Choose Add domain and enter one complete hostname, such as app.example.com. Do not include https://, a path, port, or wildcard. A Site can have up to ten custom domains.
  3. Copy the TXT ownership record and the routing records Elowen displays. Add them with your DNS provider. Use the exact names and values shown for this domain.
  4. For a root domain, use the displayed address records, or an ALIAS/ANAME record if your provider supports it. For a subdomain, the displayed CNAME is usually simplest.
  5. Keep the setup open while DNS propagates. Elowen checks automatically; choose Check again to request an immediate check.

Finish setup

Check that ownership, routing, and HTTPS each show ready. Certificate issuance can take several minutes after DNS is correct. Only then choose Make primary if you want this hostname to be the Site's main address. The generated Elowen address remains available and does not redirect.

Troubleshoot

If ownership is pending, confirm the TXT name and value exactly. If routing points elsewhere, compare the provider's record with Elowen's current instructions and allow time for DNS propagation. A certificate error needs the displayed cause corrected before checking again. Closing setup stops its automatic checks; reopen the domain details to continue. Removing a domain from Elowen does not remove your DNS records. For the broader Sites workflow, see Sites.
