Connect your computer
Pair a computer when you want Elowen to work with files and commands on that machine. You need a signed-in account on your Elowen instance and access to the computer. This installs the standalone client, not an Elowen server. A computer becomes a Project, and work on it uses the operating-system account running the client.
Get the install command
- In your signed-in browser, open Account → Computers.
- Choose Copy install command. The page selects an installer for the browser's operating system. If it cannot identify the system, choose the matching Windows or macOS/Linux option.
- On the computer you intend to pair, open PowerShell on Windows or a terminal on Linux or macOS, then paste the copied command.
- Run it within ten minutes. The command is one-use; if it expires or has already been used, return to the page and copy another.
The command downloads a signed client, verifies it, installs it for your user, and pairs the computer with your account. It does not require Node.js or npm and asks no setup questions. Treat the command as a credential: use it only on the computer you intend to connect, and do not share it.
Run and check the client
The client connects in the background and reconnects after a network interruption or computer restart. Return to Account → Computers and check that the computer appears in the list and is online. Its Project is available under Projects. If the command prints an export PATH=... line, add it to your shell profile so elowen is available in new terminal sessions; Windows adds its user Path entry itself.
Disconnect the computer
On your computer's row, choose Disconnect computer and read the confirmation. Disconnecting immediately revokes its access and removes its Project and members; files on the computer stay untouched and conversations are kept. If the instance cannot be reached, clean up the client locally and remove the computer from Account → Computers when the instance is available again.
Verify the result
Confirm the computer is listed and online in Account → Computers, then check that its Project appears under Projects. After disconnecting, confirm it is no longer listed; its local files remain on the computer.
Common problems
If the computer does not appear, check the command completed and the client is running. An offline computer cannot receive work; commands are not moved to the server. If the page shows an install error or the command is no longer valid, copy a fresh one. Administrators do not automatically gain membership to someone else's computer Project.
