Setting up Chetty

Install supervised services

Provision Chetty as supervised services on a host that already has the package, and configure access to it.

Before you start

  • Debian or Ubuntu with the Chetty package installed, and root or sudo.
  • The domain or IP address users will open.
  • A licence key, if the instance does not have one yet. See Licence and activation.

Installing the release does this for you. Run this procedure when the package is on the host but the services are not provisioned yet, for example on a source checkout.

Run the installer

  1. Review the options before you accept system changes:

    elowen install --help
  2. Run the installer as root:

    sudo elowen install
  3. Choose the deployment. A domain deployment passes --domain example.com and gets a reverse proxy with Let's Encrypt HTTPS; --proxy nginx|apache picks the proxy, and --host <ip> serves the Web UI on a port directly.

  4. Finish the setup wizard: the first administrator, an optional Project, the AI provider and model, and your preferences.

For an unattended run, pass --unattended together with the required options instead of answering the wizard.

Use an external database

A local install provisions PostgreSQL 18 and its own PgBouncer on the host. To use an external database, pass --database-url. The server must meet these requirements:

  • PostgreSQL 16 or newer.
  • The vector (0.7 or newer) and pg_trgm extensions installed in the database.
  • pg_stat_statements listed in shared_preload_libraries.
  • A role that is allowed to create schemas.

A URL that reaches the database over TCP must carry sslmode=verify-full.

Keep the daemon private

Put HTTPS in front of the Web UI. Keep the daemon's general API private unless direct access is deliberate: users reach it through the Web UI and the reverse proxy.

Check that it worked

  1. Run elowen status. Both services are active.
  2. Open the Web UI address in a browser. The login page appears.
  3. Sign in as the administrator you created.

Read Confirm a restart for the health checks and the log lines that prove a running instance.
