Read, search and list files

Open a file, a long log, an image or a PDF, and find text or files anywhere the conversation can reach.

Read a text file

  1. Ask Chetty to read the file, for example "read build.log".
  2. Read the answer in chat. Read shows 2,000 lines by default, and FileInfo shows a file's size, type and modified time when you only need to look at it.

A successful read also lets Chetty change that file later. Read Edit a file and transfer it before a change matters.

Page through a long file

  1. Ask for the part you need, for example "read lines 500 to 700".
  2. When the answer stops early, ask for the next range; offset and limit move the page.
  • Every text page, including one with an explicit limit, must fit both the configured read cap and the live output limit, counting line numbers and paging notices. An oversized page is refused and does not authorize a change, so ask for a smaller page.
  • A line offset cannot split a very long line. Ask for a targeted filter or a bounded slice through Bash instead.
  • An unpaginated read is refused when its estimated token cost exceeds 25,000.
  • A small page still checks the whole file, so a later change is compared against the complete file.

Read an image

Supported images are JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP and BMP. Chetty resizes each one to fit within 2,000 by 2,000 pixels and returns it as an attachment.

If resizing fails, the original is sent unchanged only when it is JPG, PNG, GIF or WebP and 3.75 MB or smaller; otherwise the image is omitted and the result says so.

Read a PDF

PDFs up to 10 pages can be read without a page range, and larger PDFs need one. Use a range such as 3, 1-5 or 1,3,5.

Scanned pages come back as images, up to five per call, and pdfMaxPages caps how many pages one read may request. A PDF authorizes a later change only when the complete document was displayed.

Install PDF support on a computer

PDF support needs Poppler (pdfinfo, pdftotext and pdftoppm) on the computer or environment that holds the file, with a 30-second limit for each converter command.

  1. Install Poppler: winget install --id oschwartz10612.Poppler -e on Windows, brew install poppler on macOS, or apt install poppler-utils or dnf install poppler-utils on Linux.
  2. Open a new terminal on that computer and run elowen tools install pdf. If Poppler is outside PATH, add --bin <directory>.
  3. The command verifies the programs and remembers them for later reads.

Find files and text

Tool What it finds Good to know
Search Text in file contents Ignores letter case and skips .git, node_modules, dist, web-dist, .next and .turbo.
Grep Text with regular expressions Case-sensitive unless asked otherwise, multiline: true matches across lines, content mode shows the matching lines, and options add context lines.
Glob Files by name pattern Returns the newest first, at most 100 files, and stops after visiting 10,000 files.
ListDir Entries of one directory A managed Project is limited to 1,000 entries per listing.
GitStatus Branch, repository and changed files Shows at most 120 changed-file entries and is unavailable on a computer.
  • Search and Grep need ripgrep on the computer or environment that holds the files.
  • searchMaxMatches caps Search results and each Grep page. Match lines are limited to 500 columns, and offset continues a Grep listing.
  • On the host, Glob skips unreadable subdirectories and says that the results are incomplete. An unreadable search root or another filesystem error fails the search.

If a read is refused

  • The page is too large: ask for a smaller page or a narrower line range.
  • The file cannot be displayed: selected device files and file types the plugin cannot display are refused.
  • A PDF fails: install Poppler on the computer or environment that holds the file, then ask again.
  • The file is missing: check the path and that the conversation points at the right Project.
