Edit a file and transfer it

Change a file without losing work, and move one file from one Project to another.

Read before you change

  1. Ask Chetty to read the file first.
  2. Ask for the change you want.
  3. Approve the change when Chetty asks.

Write and Edit refuse a change when the file was not read first, and they also refuse it when the file has changed since it was read. A shell command that displays a file does not count as a read; only Read does. A large file can be read in pages, but the check covers the complete file.

Choose Write or Edit

  • Write creates a file or replaces its whole contents.
  • Edit replaces one exact piece of text at a time, so it is the right tool for a targeted change.

Editing a file larger than 1 GB is refused.

Copy or move a file between Projects

  1. Ask Chetty to transfer the file, naming a Project and a path for both ends.
  2. Approve the request. TransferFile asks for your approval by default, like Write and Edit.

TransferFile moves one file at a time, including to and from a Computer Project. The destination is created unless the transfer replaces a version it was given. A move removes the source only after the destination is written, and a cancelled or interrupted transfer is never retried on its own.

What plan mode allows

Plan mode lets Write and Edit write this conversation's plan file and nothing else; any other change is refused when the tool runs. TransferFile stays unavailable while you plan, and the read-only tools remain available.

If a change is refused

  • The file was not read: ask Chetty to read it, then request the change again.
  • The file changed since the read: read it again and repeat the change.
  • The file is too large: files larger than 1 GB cannot be edited.
  • A transfer stopped halfway: check the destination before retrying; an interrupted transfer is never repeated automatically.
  • The file is on a computer that went offline: reconnect the computer and repeat the request; the tool does not fall back to the server's files.
