Update the terminal app

A standalone client keeps itself current, both when you open the chat and while the background connection runs.

Updates when you open the chat

When you open the chat, the client asks its instance whether a newer signed client release exists.

  1. Read the question and choose Update now or Later. Update now verifies and installs the release, then starts the chat on the new version.
  2. Choose Later to keep working on the installed version. The question comes again the next time you open the chat.

elowen run, elowen api, elowen login, the help and the version display never check for updates.

Updates in the background

The background connection updates itself without asking. It checks shortly after it starts, then every 30 minutes while no command is running, and installs a newer release silently.

It moves to the new version within about a minute of finishing its last command, so a running command is never interrupted. It also moves to an update you accepted in the chat.

A client that answered Later therefore still ends up on the new release, the background connection and the next chat included.

If an update fails

  • An installation fails: the previous client is restored, so the terminal app keeps working. Open the chat again to retry.
  • The release check fails: the client reports an error and stops the chat instead of starting on an unknown version.
  • The computer stays on an older version: check that the background connection runs. Read Keep the terminal connected.
