Set runtime limits
Runtime limits bound how much a turn may spend on tool output, waiting, memory recall and shell time, and how much history the instance keeps.
Where the settings live
Open Settings → <assistant name> AI. The Limits and connection retries block opens with Edit limits and holds the assistant's own limits; the Runtime block opens with Edit runtime and holds the rest.
The daemon clamps every value to its allowed range when you save. A size shown in tokens is approximate and counts four characters per token.
Assistant limits
- Tool output: 100 lines and about 41,000 characters in the expanded view, before older content is hidden or clipped.
- Tool and delegated results — inline limit: 120,000 bytes per result; a larger result keeps only a bounded preview.
- Tool and delegated results — turn budget: 200,000 bytes for all parallel and delegated results in one turn.
- Compaction failure limit: 3 consecutive failures before a conversation stops shortening its context by itself.
- Compaction summary retries: 2, from 0 to 5, before the built-in summarization runs instead.
- Question timeout: 6 hours, the longest a parked question waits before it resolves as no answer.
- Memory recall: up to 10 memories at the start of a turn, sharing a 20,000-byte budget.
- Live channel sessions: 32; the least recently used conversation is dropped from memory and its history stays in the database.
Runtime settings
The same block tunes the local shell timeout, 30 seconds by default, and the mid-turn reminder interval, every 20 tool calls by default.
Memory-related values live here too: the relevance floor, the duplicate and paraphrase thresholds, the importance and vitality weights, and how many memories automatic saving may write per exchange, 2 by default.
Plan mode suggests at most three read-only explore agents and three plan agents; both settings accept 0 to 5.
Automatic skill review
Maximum skill changes per exchange (default 1, 0 to 6), Skill review every N tool calls (default 100, 1 to 200) and Minimum tool calls for a skill review (default 1, 1 to 200) tune how Chetty learns procedures.
The interval default applies only while no explicit value is stored, so a saved interval stays. Reviews consider the completed conversation on the same model and provider account.
A review is skipped when the provider route is not verified, capacity is unavailable, or a sign-in account has used at least 90% of its weekly allowance or its allowance is unknown. Skipped work keeps its count for a later exchange, and a write budget of 0 switches automatic learning off.
Memory maintenance pacing
Memory dreaming: hours since the last pass (1 to 168, default 24) is how long an account must have gone without a maintenance pass. Memory dreaming: conversations since the last pass (1 to 50, default 5) is how many other conversations must each hold a finished exchange.
A pass reconciles memories across conversations, so a shorter interval or fewer conversations means more passes and a higher cost. Changes apply to the next check without a restart.
Users turn the feature on for their own account under Account → Memory, where Run now ignores both limits.
Tool loading and sub-agents
Tool deferral is on by default with a threshold of 10 tools. Above that threshold only the core tools, Bash, Read, Edit, Grep and Write, stay fully loaded in the prompt.
The sub-agent runner is on by default and sizes its pool automatically. Delegated turns run in separate processes, which keeps the interface responsive and spreads work across cores.
Provider request capture is on by default. Turning it off stops new captures and keeps the existing records.
Retention and cleanup
- Activity log retention: 1 to 365 days, 30 by default.
- IP address retention: 1 to 365 days, 30 by default.
- Provider diagnostics retention: 1 to 90 days, 14 by default, with a global storage limit for new captures.
- Conversation retention: conversations idle for 10 days are removed, while active sessions, delegated work and platform sessions are protected.
Diagnostics cleanup removes a whole diagnostic session at a time and never touches its conversation.
